About Adam Hale
In short
I’m Adam Hale, the author of Sound Mind. For more than a decade, sexual thoughts dominated my mind, and I lived in the loop of compulsion and shame. I found a way out that didn’t cost me my drive. I wrote the book to give other men that way out as a plan they can follow.
My story
For many years, sexual thoughts dominated my mind. I struggled on and off for more than a decade, gaining control, losing it, and leaning on willpower to win it back. It got in the way of every relationship I had. Along with it came shame, anger, frustration, and a hit to my self-respect. I was short on energy, motivation, and any sense of being fully alive.
The turning point was simple. I couldn’t take the merry-go-round anymore.
What changed things wasn’t more willpower. I read everything I could find: religious, psychological, and mystical writing, and the lives of yogis, ascetics, and athletes who chose abstinence for their own reasons. Through introspection and grace, I came to see there was another way of being. In it, I wasn’t deprived of anything. The pull was simply gone, and it had no power over me. That came from a complete shift in perspective and feeling.
Meditation played a part. So did my relationship with God, leaning into it and surrendering. And so did picturing how the lives of the people I love would improve once the shame and guilt were out of the way.
Today I’m 54. I have more energy, confidence, patience, and peace than I’ve ever had, and my relationships are better than they’ve ever been. That’s my experience, not a promise. Your path will be your own.
Why I wrote Sound Mind
Most of what men find when they search for help falls into one of two camps. One says the drive itself is the problem, and tries to shut it down. The other says there’s no problem at all. Neither one fits the men this book is for.
Sound Mind takes a different position. Your drive is healthy. The compulsion isn’t, and it can go while your drive stays. Willpower was never the answer. Seeing the loop clearly and planning ahead are.
So the book is a plan: 15 steps, 30 days, and one page you can carry. You can read Chapter 1 free.
What I’m not
I’m not a doctor or a therapist. The book and this site are education and a self-help plan, not medical or psychological treatment. My credibility comes from two places: I’ve lived this, and every factual claim here has a source you can check. Our editorial standards explain how that works.
The name
Adam Hale is a pen name, which I use for privacy. Hale means healthy and whole. That’s the whole idea.
